Race to End Women’s Cancer Returns to D.C. as Gynecologic Cancer Cases Continue to Rise

Amid rising uterine cancer cases and the critical need to address all women’s cancers, the annual event unites survivors, families, and advocates for a free educational forum and community Race weekend

Gynecologic cancers are on the rise, affecting a growing number of patients and families, yet these issues remain far too absent from everyday health conversations. The rise in uterine cancer is especially urgent. It is now the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States, with an estimated 68,270 new cases this year, according to the American Cancer Society. Meanwhile, symptoms of uterine, ovarian and other gynecologic cancers can masquerade as benign health conditions. As diagnoses increase, the need for greater public awareness, open dialogue, research, and education has never been more critical.

September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, and the Foundation for Women's Cancer (FWC) is hosting a free Patient & Advocate Education Forum on Saturday, September 19, and the 2026 Race to End Women's Cancer on Sunday, September 20, at Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., and virtually.

While the Pap test has helped reduce the burden of cervical cancer through early detection and prevention, there is no routine screening test for uterine, ovarian, vaginal, or vulvar cancers. That's why awareness of symptoms matters and why Race weekend raises critical support for lifesaving programs, scientific discovery, and patient resources.

“The progress we've seen in cervical cancer shows what is possible when research, prevention, and awareness come together,” said Ginger J. Gardner, MD, FACOG, Chair of the Foundation for Women's Cancer. “But we cannot take that progress for granted, particularly as cervical cancer screening declines among younger women. Endometrial cancer rates continue to rise, and ovarian cancer remains the leading cause of gynecologic cancer death. The Race brings our community together across all gynecologic cancers to raise awareness, support research, and improve outcomes for all patients and families.”

FWC hosts the Race with support from the D.C. Department of Health (DC Health), which will be on site with free resources for the community. The department's WISH Cancer Screening Program provides no-cost early detection services and peer support for eligible residents. Mayor Muriel Bowser has issued an official proclamation recognizing Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month and the Race to End Women's Cancer, highlighting the importance of prevention, early detection, and support for those affected by gynecologic cancers.

Before the Race: Patient & Advocate Education Forum

The day before the Race, on Saturday, September 19, the Foundation for Women's Cancer will host a free Patient & Advocate Education Forum on Gynecologic Health and Cancer at Hotel Washington from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The forum connects patients, survivors, caregivers, and advocates with leading gynecologic cancer specialists for practical, evidence-based information on prevention, treatment advances, survivorship, and advocacy. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, learn from experts, and connect with others navigating the gynecologic cancer journey.

What to Expect on Race Day

Whether participants choose the timed 5K, 1-mile walk, or Kids Fun Run, Race Day is an opportunity to honor survivors, remember loved ones, connect with others affected by gynecologic cancers, and support progress for people affected by these diseases.
